Chamber Music Coaching

An immersive ensemble program for intermediate to advanced pianists

An immersive coaching program exploring the full breadth of piano chamber music — from Classical trios and quartets to Romantic and 20th-century ensemble works. Students rehearse weekly in small ensembles, receive individual coaching from Dr. Chen, and build toward a public performance at semester’s end. Chamber music is among the most rewarding aspects of musical study, and this course is designed to make it transformative.

WHAT YOU’LL DEVELOP

Repertoire Mastery

Study the essential piano chamber canon — piano trios, quartets, and quintets of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, through to Romantic and 20th-century works.

Ensemble Listening

Develop the active listening and real-time communication that defines great ensemble playing — learning to respond, balance, and blend with your fellow musicians.

Performance Experience

Perform monthly in studio class, gain experience in ensemble settings throughout the term, and present a full movement in a formal end-of-semester recital.

COURSE STRUCTURE

Weekly

Ensemble Rehearsals

1–2 independent rehearsals, minimum 1 hour each. Times and locations confirmed by week two.

Weekly

Coaching with Dr. Chen

30–45 minute session per ensemble, scheduled directly with Dr. Chen. Punctuality and preparation are essential.

Monthly

Studio Class

Perform for peers in a supportive setting and receive constructive feedback from Dr. Chen and fellow students.

End of Term

Public Recital

Each ensemble presents at least one full movement of a chamber work in a formal recital — the culmination of the semester’s work.
